Santu Antoni de Su o’u
The fires of Sant’Antonio Abate are the propitiatory rite par excellence, the good omen for a fertile year on the fields. Widespread throughout Sardinia, in the town of Mamoiada it takes on the contours of the festival, with the spectacular first outing of the Mamuthones and Issohadores, with their incredible dance around the flames.
The feast of St. Anthony, among the oldest in Sardinia, is a mixture of pagan and religious celebration of the gift of fire. This festival traditionally starts the carnival and in Mamoiada the two masks mentioned above, make their first outing (Sa prima essia) by visiting each district of the country and making three ritual turns around each fire.
